James Jones
Queens, New York
I attended the fine arts program at Laguardia community college between 2010 and 2012.
For over 10 years now painting has been my passion, along with other visual art mediums. Growing up in New York I found a love for the streetwear community, and used the cultural aesthetic to influence my work.
My life long obsession with graffiti and fashion has always fueled my creative process, and creating graphic art has become the main staple for channeling these influences. Inspired by early skate, and streetwear brands I create T-shirts and designs to also represent subcultures, and communities who thrive on the DIY mentality.
Artist Statement
I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of images from vandalism inside of a bathroom stall, doodles in a notebook, pictures in a scrapbook to the digital manipulation of images to create everything from corporate advertisements to Zines. Cutting out images and reassembling them to create new pictures is at the core of my practice. not exactly the physical act of cutting pictures out and putting them back together to make a new picture. It's more about the juxtaposition of images and how those images through collage create a visual landscape. Exploring this idea through painting, graphic design, fashion design, music and conversation.
Fashion, music and art being my major interest in how a subculture can influence popular culture and, How a collage of influences can redefine itself by collaboration and association. Pre 1970; turntables and microphone were not considered the iconic images of Hip Hop, pre 1990 Nike sneakers and long athletic shorts weren't the images your brain directly linked to urban basketball. These are examples of how the juxtaposition of objects, images and ideas can help an individual identify a culture.
